Mutu's site specific work for the Promenade uses sensual mixed media materials to provide a glimpse into the provocative world of exotic dancers, once a space for men only. As a mixed media artist, she often uses collaged elements rooted in the history of Kenyan story-telling combined with chimerical images of the African female body, thus challenging conventional notions of beauty and desire. Mutu's response to the vision of Museum as Body Electric includes both her mural as well as her own imagining of the promenade as the organ of the Museum's body where she "makes her magic."

Wangechi Mutu was born in Kenya in 1972 and currently lives and works in New York, NY. She received her BFA from Cooper Union, New York, NY and her MFA from Yale School of Art, New Haven, CT. Her work is included in numerous public collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, CA; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY.
